Greenport's Antique Carousel

Hop aboard the famous 1920s carousel that plays center stage in Greenport’s waterfront village. The 40-foot wide, wooden carousel twirls its riders upon 36, hand painted, jumping horses and 2 chariots for an exuberant three-minute ride. Tensions run high to saddle up on one of the outside horses for the chance at grabbing the brass ring. The lucky rider to do so is awarded with another spin for free. Perfectly placed under a glass enclosed pavilion makes this a year round favorite for not only the young but also the young at heart. Us included! Open 10am to 9pm.

Mark. Are you there?

Russian born abstract artist Mark Rothko has been a resident of the East Marion Cemetery since his death in 1970, but his two children would like otherwise. Last year a court battle ensued with permission granted to have Mr. Rothko moved to Westchester. We're not sure but he still seems to be with us, thankfully. This from the New York Times. See more images at OneCameraOneLens.com.

For a slice of Americana head for the village of Orient. Stop into the Country Store where a bit of nostalgia is served up along with a cup of joe, deli sandwiches, breads and bagels from Tom Cat and all other household staples. Best of all come for the gossip dished in the back by the locals.

Check out the stars on Saturdays from dusk until midnight. The Custer Institute Observatory opens it’s high powered Meade telescope to everyone for free. This is Long Island's oldest observatory founded back in 1927 by a group of astronomy friends. The original building dates back to 1938 with the newest addition, which seats 100, completed in 1945. Stargazing continues at this down to earth site every Saturday night at dusk. Cloudy weather? Call ahead to check on visibility.

All events are free but donations are greatly appreciated.
